Chapter 8 - Mr. Hot Pants

d

The second part of the day was just as exhausting as the first. I slowed down my attempts to push Charles and Serena together. In a way, my absence from dinner might do more for a possible romance between them than all my ploys.

It took me some diligent scrubbing to get rid of the Sally makeup. Today had been fine, so I had another appointment early next morning for another face painting job. While I’d been away, the carrier had delivered the clothes I had ordered the night before. Unless I got really depresses after talking to Magnolia, tomorrow was going to be even better than today.

And then you’ll go your way and Charles will go his.

I ordered myself a bottle of white wine with dinner and opened the laptop, setting up for the video call. I ate and had a glass of wine before Magnolia called.

“Can you talk?” she asked.

“Yes, I’m in my room. What’s going on?”

I glanced at the bottle of white wine next to the laptop. I rarely drank at home or in hotel rooms, but I had a feeling that I’d go through all of it by the time Magnolia unburdened herself.

She looked down and I took in a deep breath, preparing myself to see my best friend crying. Instead, she thrust her cell phone into the camera. It took me a second to figure out what she was showing me.

Dammit, Blake!

My brother had posted lots of photos, and I had monitored everything. He hadn’t posted any photos with me yesterday. Some of the ones from today had me in the shot, but I was almost unrecognizable under the heavy Sally makeup. Someone who knew me well might guess it was me. I just had to hope that the facial recognition wasn’t going to work and these photos would never make it to Brendan’s feed. However, I hadn’t counted on the fact that they might appear on the feed of someone else who’d know me even under heavy makeup. Someone like my best friend.

The problem wasn’t as much that the photo that had popped up on Magnolia’s feed had me in it. The problem was that it had me and Charles.

When she took away the phone, her expression was one I had seen on my mother’s face too many times to count. Though, with my mom, it was usually meant for Blake, who got caught far more often than I ever had.

“Explain,” Magnolia said.

“This is a little awkward,” I started, attempting to ease her in the insanity of the real situation.

“I’m not seeing things, right?” she interrupted me. “That’s the guy from Shadow, right?”

“Umm, yes.”

“You said you didn’t even get his name or his number.”

“I didn’t. Technically.”

“Kasey Marie Williams, I’m not your mother. Don’t you give me that ‘technically’ bullshit.”

“You sounded a little like her just now.”

She didn’t get distracted. “Did you lie to me?” she asked me directly.

“No,” I said immediately. “I didn’t get his name that night because I didn’t need to get it.
